Poetry and Writing
It has for some time been the ambition of Art for Life to extend the range of art forms that it works with as well as offer more active opportunities for people to express themselves creatively. Consultation via the Art for Life annual Open Forum confirmed the support for establishing an ongoing writing group for staff and patients.
With the help of writer, Sue Mayfield a Poetry Steering Group has been established and they are currently working on their second project called 'Travelling Together' , a project to create poems about journeys patients and staff have made, both epic and everyday, geographical and emotional.
The first Poetry project worked with the Hidden Talents theme of 'My Favourite Place'. Sue Mayfield offered patients the opportunity to write a poem about their favourite place. She worked one-to-one at patient’s bedsides, helping participants create simple 14 word poems out of words and phrases used in conversation. A group of staff also had the opportunity to create their own poems.
The finished poems were printed and displayed as part of the 'My Favourite Place' exhibition in the Musgrove Gallery and can be seen by clicking here.
